Biman to decide if a foreigner will be appointed as its new MD

downloadThe new board of Biman Bangladesh Airlines will decide today whether it would appoint a foreigner as its managing director and chief executive.

The post fell vacant after British national Kyle Haywood’s tenure ended on January 10. He declined to renew the contract on health grounds.

MM Asaduzzaman, director (engineering) of the flag carrier, has been serving as the acting MD and CEO since then.

The implementation of the new government pay scale for the officials and employees of Biman will also be discussed at today’s meeting, said officials at the civil aviation ministry and Biman.

“The board members are of different opinions about how the MD should be appointed,” an official of the ministry told The Daily Star yesterday.

Some directors argue that, since Biman is fully owned by the government, a local aviation expert should be appointed, while others think a foreign expert can be appointed as the airline is a public limited company, he said.

The airline has so far appointed two foreigners as its MD. Biman board published advertisements in January seeking applications from foreign and local people. A senior official of Biman said about 40 locals and foreigners applied for the post and a short list has been prepared. Biman got a new board on March 29, which is headed by Air Marshal (retd) Muhammad Enamul Bari.
