Lufthansa flight LH476, which was flying to Vancouver, had to divert from Munich towards Hamburg on 2 May 22, when a unruly passenger tried to have a smoke inside the flight. When the crew found out his behaviour to be threatening to the safety of his fellow passengers, they decided to make an emergency landing.
The man, who was later marked as a mentally distressed person by the doctor, tried to open the rear door of the Airbus A340-600, almost at the altitude of 38000 feet.
Dan Losch, a passenger of the same flight informed, “It was reported that there was a man in the back of the plane screaming and yelling and apparently tried to open the back door of the aircraft at 38,000 feet. Apparently, at the beginning of the flight, he was being a little difficult. I guess once we got in the air, he got more and more agitated and he tried to light up a cigarette.
Rescue crew along with a doctor was waiting down at the Hamburg airport to control the situation. The man was taken to a nearby psychiatric facility, right away. Paramedics and other officials had to forcefully escort him out of the flight after the emergency landing.
