The International Labour Organisation (ILO) and International Organisation for Migration (IOM) have agreed to strengthen their collaboration in Bangladesh on activities of common interest, in particular safe and skilled migration.
ILO, IOM sign deal to ensure safe migration
A cooperation agreement was signed in this regard in a city hotel on Wednesday, according to an ILO statement.
ILO Bangladesh Country Director Srinivas Reddy, IOM Bangladesh Chief of Mission Sarat Dash, Ministry of Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Secretary Begum Shamsun Nahar, Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque, and UN Resident Coordinator Argentina Matavel Piccin, among others, were present at the signing ceremony.
Quoting Mr Reddy the statement said, “ILO and IOM share a vision and commitment to improve the lives of workers in Bangladesh, especially of those who migrate to find a better future for themselves and their families.”
“This partnership will help us to pull together the strength of both agencies to serve our clients better,” said Mr Dash.
The signing ceremony was organised on the sidelines of a discussion on ‘Maximising the Potential of Labour Migration through Skills Development and Accreditation’ organised by IOM and ILO.
The discussion focused on increasing priority to skilled workers by the government of Bangladesh and how this could be supported to also include labour migrants.
The agreement will guide both the agencies to implement their programmes in Bangladesh in the field of migration and labour rights through formulation of strategic partnerships and joint activities, the statement added.
Support will also be provided to Bangladesh to fulfil its commitments to regional and international forums and frameworks on migration and employment.
