The Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, under direct order of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is carrying out the technical survey to convert Syedpur airport into an international one.
Earlier in January, a team of experts had completed the preliminary survey.
Two officials of the ministry Rabindra Kumar Dash and Jahirul Islam have been carefully monitoring the ongoing task.
All obstructions within the airport’s 13 kilometres radius will be removed, sources said.
While contacted the Managing Director of Syedpur Airport Saheen Ahamed said preliminary tasks including land acquisition and others would be completed very soon.
The airport will be 10,000 feet long instead of existing 6,000 feet and the runway will extend towards the southern end. The breadth of the airport will extend by 25 feet on either side, according to sources.
The district administration had already selected the land to be acquired. To comply with the international safety measure, extensive security system will be implemented too.
When completed, the airport will serve as a regional hub and will link Bangladesh with other regional countries like Nepal, Bhutan and India.
