The government wants to enhance its ties with the United States in order to ensure international standard security at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Three separate meetings were held on Wednesday, where the Ministers and senior government officials, including Foreign Secretary, discussed how the cooperation can be enhanced between Bangladesh and the USA.
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon and Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali held a meeting at state guesthouse in the city to discuss the issue, Civil Aviation Ministry sources said.
Meanwhile, US Ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Bernicat met Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque at the latter’s office and discussed various issues, including airport security. On the other hand, an inter-ministerial meeting, chaired by the Foreign Secretary, was held at the Foreign Ministry to discuss ways for enhancing cooperation with the USA.
Earlier, the US Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Assistant Secretary for International Affairs Alan Bersin with an inter agency delegation visited Bangladesh on March 29-31 and held a series of meetings with government officials to engage on security issues and discussed potential areas for collaboration such as aviation security and law enforcement.
