India imposes penalty for aircraft with empty waste tanks

585b624e8ad95_1482383950In an effort to address the menace of aircraft waste being ejected on to unsuspecting residents below, India’s National Green Tribunal has introduced a INR 50,000 fine for offending airlines.

This follows reports of houses close to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport being splattered with human waste from aircraft coming into land.

“Aircraft on landing shall be subjected to surprise inspection to see that human waste tanks are not empty. If any aircraft… tanks are found empty on landing, they shall be subjected to environment compensation of INR 50,000 per default,” it was ruled.

Aircraft waste should be disposed of by ground handling personnel once the aircraft lands.
